Chicago mom Carlishia Hood broke down Tuesday while announcing a lawsuit over the since-dropped murder charges filed against her and her 14-year-old son for shooting dead her attacker.
Hood, 35, said she was suing because her “life changed” when she and her son were arrested for shooting dead Jeremy Brown, 32, to stop him from violently beating her in a fast-food eatery.
“I’ve experienced pain in many ways — many ways that I would never have thought. Never,” said Hood, who was comforted by her attorneys when she broke down in tears.
“What happened to me was totally unnecessary.”
The mom and her son were both charged with first-degree murder last week over the June 18 shooting.
However, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Monday that the charges had been dropped “in light of emerging evidence” after video was obtained showing Hood being brutally pummeled by Brown. They were both released that day.
“Never in a million years would I have imagined being brutally attacked, beaten — and then arrested,” the mom said while announcing her lawsuit less than 24 hours after her release.
“I just thank God everything was revealed,” she said, calling the deadly shooting a “horrible tragedy.”
Hood’s lawyer, Brandon Brown, confirmed that a four-count complaint had been filed Tuesday morning against the city and four arresting cops.
“The complaint contains counts of malicious prosecution, false arrest and intentional infliction of emotional distress,” the attorney said, without detailing how much they were seeking.
He condemned the initial charges as “an obvious rush to judgment.”
“You don’t have to be a lawyer to recognize that when a woman is being violently attacked by a man that she shouldn’t be arrested,” he said of the client who was initially held on a $3 million bond
“We do not take what happened to Ms. Hood lightly,” he said — while warning that “there will be additional lawsuits forthcoming.”
